Course participants will receive a 42-hour advanced qualification certificate.
This advanced qualification course has been developed by experts in the assessment of oral and written work. We have combined theoretical knowledge gained at institutions such as Arizona State University, Bell Cambridge, Dublin City University, and International House with practical experience in preparing students for international exams.

The course consists of a series of interactive methodological webinars (10 webinars plus mandatory homework on the educational platform), where we will sequentially analyse CEFR competencies and their corresponding evaluation criteria for the Speaking and Writing sections of the FCE, CAE, CPE, and IELTS exams.

In the practical part, course participants will practice assessing works, developing tasks, and creating their own assessment tools.
Syllabus and schedule
Friday, 31 January
17:30–19:00: Speaking: Language
What instances of grammar and vocabulary use do we seek in successful candidates? Are mistakes allowed? To what extent should the choice of words and grammar patterns be complex and sophisticated? How do we balance fluency and accuracy?

19:15–20:45: Writing: Organisation
Written discourse is analysed by elements of coherence and cohesion. We will discuss the flexible use of cohesive devices and less common organisational patterns to achieve the communicative purpose.
Saturday, 1 February
12:00–13:30: Writing: Communicative Achievement
This part focuses on how appropriate the writing is for the task and whether the candidate has demonstrated the knowledge of genre, format, register and function. It also explores the strategies for holding the target reader’s attention and communicate ideas effectively.

14:00–15:30: Speaking: Pronunciation
Common misconceptions and pitfalls. What should students focus on and what are the most common weak areas.
Friday, 7 February
17:30–19:00: Speaking: Discourse Management
This explores a speaker’s ability to steer conversation in a specific direction. It refers to how relevant and cohesive the language is.

19:15–20:45: Writing: Language 1 (Vocabulary)
This seminar delves into the intricacies of advanced vocabulary, examining what characterizes less common lexis and how to effectively adapt word choice and style. We will explore strategies for selecting sophisticated language that enhances communication and engages the reader.
Saturday, 8 February
12:00–13:30: Writing: Language 2 (Grammar)
This seminar focuses on demonstrating control and consistency in grammar use. It explores which grammar patterns enhance the effectiveness of a piece, identifies errors that impede communication, and underscores the importance of punctuation.

14:00–15:30: Speaking: Interaction
Effective communication is about more than just exchanging information. As well as being able to clearly convey a message, a candidate needs to demonstrate their ability to listen actively, respond and extend the scope beyond the task.

17:30–19:00: Setting the standard: Speaking
The final session will focus on the criteria and Can-Do statements related to Speaking Skills. The aim of this session is to revise the criteria and establish standards for various levels and different exams. Additionally, students will take their final test.
